  WHAT HAPPENED?

  The Frenchman was slotted through by Rodrygo but still had plenty to do. After skilfully turning inside Josko Gvardiol and leaving the City defender on the ground, he calmly struck the ball home to make it 2-0 to Madrid on the night and 5-2 on aggregate. In his celebration, he seemed to point at the floored defender and made a hand gesture mocking Gvardiol's desperate slide that failed to stop him.

  Mbappe's goal left City 2-0 down at the break and staring down the barrel of an early Champions League exit. Guardiola's team simply doesn't look capable of competing with Europe's elite, and throughout this season they've struggled to hit back after falling behind even against far less talented outfits. If they're going to start showing a more steely side, now's the time to do it.

  WHAT NEXT FOR MBAPPE?

  Real Madrid's goal-scorer faced plenty of criticism for his performance in the first leg of this tie, but he's more than made up for it at the Bernabeu, scoring twice and leading the home side's charge against a beleaguered City side that is struggling domestically and now looks set to crash out of the Champions League.
